How to pick the perfect outfit for an important job interview
First impressions certainly do count for a lot – which means you’ll want to dress appropriately for your job interviews.
Depending on what field you’re going into and what type of company you’re interviewing at – that may mean a full suit and it may mean jeans and a tshirt. I’m currently the Director of Marketing at a social gaming startup and we’re totally cool with interviewees dressing down. It’s fits our culture to be comfortable while taking care of business.
However, my first job interview (and subsequently my first job) out of college was at Comcast. Because Comcast is a big corporation with a dress code, I wore a black suit (with a bright colored top under the jacket) to my interview.
So, how do you know what kind of outfit to wear? Ask! When setting up your interview inquire about the appropriate attire, although if in doubt dress up rather than down. Even at a small, indy startup you’ll be safe in business casual even if they wouldn’t mind you showing up in jeans. However, you won’t make it through a full interview at a big corporation if you’re dressed in jean capris and a Maroon 5 tshirt. Even if you’re wearing a fancy blazer over the tshirt. Seriously.
